SENCO Network Days with Rachel Cosgrove
Rachel Cosgrove has many years of experience as a SENCO and assistant headteacher in secondary and primary school. She is the author of Inclusive Teaching in a Nutshell – published by Routledge.
Rachel has worked as a freelance special educational needs (SEN) consultant for the last five years and supports schools and other organisations in developing SEN provision and training.
This year’s content is focused on identified priorities from Diverse Academies Trust (DAT), SEN identification, adaptive teaching and developing the SENCO as a leader.
Session 1
- Working as a SENCo – the national picture.
- Digging deep into SEN identification – exploring ways SENCos can develop their confidence and skills around identifying which pupils meet the criteria for needing additional and/or different provision.
- The SENCo’s role in identifying, developing and maintaining effective whole school adaptive teaching – what to look for, how to feedback effectively to staff, closing gaps in practice and cascading good practice.
- The SENCo as a leader – a valuable session to look at different SENCO leadership styles, share ideas collaboratively and identify areas we would like to develop further as strategic leaders.
- SENCO wellbeing – managing the role in a healthy way.
Session 2
- Observing adaptive teaching – sharing good practice, pitfalls, how to influence development of inclusive practice.
- Using data as a SENCO – a detailed look at the range of data available to SENCos, how to make sense and use of it to inform decision making around provision and whole school strategy.
- Attendance and SEN – what is the data telling us? A session to explore the complexity of why pupils with SEN are a vulnerable group re attendance including looking at patterns in the cohort, sharing strategies that support attendance, working with outside agencies with complex cases, whole school strategies.
- SENCo as a leader – identifying attributes and skills which support our work and developing as individuals. A reflective session enabling SENCos to explore what they bring to the role and how they would like to develop in the future.
- SENCo well-being – managing the role in a healthy way.
